The Kalu'ak Fishing Contest is a new event for the best fishermen to be held in Northrend starting with the introduction of Patch 3.3.
In this Kalu'ak Fishing Contest Guide we intend to give you some tips to make it easier for you to catch the elusive Macuira Shark.
Contest Summary
- When?: Saturdays from 14:00 p.m. to 15:00 p.m. (server time).
- ¿Donde?: Northrend.
- What is lacking?: It is necessary to have the expansion of Wrath of the Lich King and a fishing pole. It is advisable to be able to reach Dalaran quickly. As of Patch 3.3, it is not possible to fish trash from schools of fish so with 1 skill point in fishing, it is possible to do so.

What to do?
Let's see how we can win this contest.
1. Wait for Ancestor Clearwater to yell, "The Kalu'ak fishing contest has begun!"
This happens at 14:00 p.m. on Saturdays. The Clearwater Elder arrives in Dalaran 1 hour before the contest begins. 5 minutes before, it will notify the start.
You do not need to be in Dalaran or accept any quests. You just have to be in Northrend near a School of Fish, ready to start fishing.
2.- Fish in (almost) any fishing school in Northrend
Fish any school of Northrend fish where there is Remora Pygmea. It is not advisable to fish in Pools of Blood (the ones you do with the fishing log) and avoid banks of Crystalfin Tiny, which has a lower proportion of finding Rémora Pígmea than any other bank. You can also fish in normal water wherever you find Remora Pygmea but the probability of obtaining it will be less than in banks. If you plan to win, fish for schools of fish.
3.- From bank to bank until the Macuira Shark is caught
El Macuira Shark it is caught with normal fish. Expect about 50 fish before the Shark bites the hook. Keep in mind that the Shark is linked to the fisherman so you will not be able to pass it to them.
4.- Take your capture to Ancestor Clearwater in Dalaran
Travel to Dalaran as fast as you can: Use a Hearthstone, Kirin Tor Ring, Portal, Summon, whatever. The Clear Waters Ancestor will be right at the Source of the Mantle of Night. Like the Stranglethorn Vale Fishing Tournament, the first angler to turn in their catch each week will win the top prize. The winner will be announced with a warning that will be heard far away ... The ancestor has a powerful voice!
5.- If you did not win ...
Less fortunate (or slower) fishermen can give their catch to Elder Clearwater for a lesser reward. At 15:00, the Ancestor will notify again that the contest is over and it will no longer be possible to fish the Macuira Shark in the banks. However, the patient Ancestor Clearwater will remain until 16:00 PM in Dalaran so that those furthest behind can return their captures.

Capturing the Macuira Shark
We are not sure of the probability of capturing the Macuira Shark. The only official information in this regard is:
It is said that the favorite food of these sharks is the tiny pygmy remoras. Maybe a bait in their waters will work. Due to the high concentration of fish, you have an increased chance of catching the shark within schools of fish. Don't forget that in Patch 3.3 you will never catch trash from fishing grounds regardless of your skill.
El Macuira Shark it can be caught anywhere Remora Pígmea can be fished. The chance of getting the Shark increases with a higher chance of catching Pygmy Remora.
According to the first contests, the catch is not simply random: no fisherman has managed to catch the Macuira Shark in less than 30-40 attempts. Why is no one lucky?
Random drops can be more or less likely, for example:
- The more you try to get a quest item, the more likely you are to get it on each kill.
- Fishing is different at certain times
- Spells can change the range of captures as the benefit of the Gold Coin in the Fountain of the Mantle of the Night. Each fishing range and each fishing object have a different spell.
Trying to theorize about it is quite difficult because the Macuira Shark is not a common catch. It is only available 1 hour a week and there is no guarantee that you will be caught in that hour. Hopefully there are plenty of "how to win" theories that can't be proven. If you think that wearing your Lucky Fishing Hat it will make a difference, so ... put it on!
The strategies here are focused on capturing Pygmy Remoras as quickly as possible in the hope that one of them is a Shark.
Preparation for the contest
The preparations for the contest are quite similar to that of Stranglethorn Vale.
Here is the most important:
- Learn the skill of Look for fish a Deteriorated journal. It will save you time when it comes to finding schools of fish. It takes 100 fishing skill points.
- Learn the epic flyer mount with Cold Weather Flight. It sure saves you some time.
- Set your Hearthstone in Dalaran unless you plan to use another method of teleportation such as a Portal or Kirin Tor Ring. As soon as you capture the Macuira Shark, return to Dalaran. The Alliance should place their stone in the Silver Covenant tavern that is closest to the Fountain of the Mantle of Night. All Horde taverns are considerably further from the source than those of the Alliance. It is recommended that the Horde wear a ring to travel to the city (although they are expensive, the most basic one costs 8,500 gold coins)
- Keep your graphics to a minimum. Teleporting to Dalaran will be much faster and will therefore allow you to speak to Ancestor Clearwater much earlier.
Banks Strategy
Pygmy Remoras can be fished on most schools of fish in Northrend. They can also be caught in Open Water. Each one has a different probability of getting Remora Pygmea:
- 2 out of 3 (65%) caught in schools of fish will carry Remora Pygmea
- 1 in 10 (10%) catches in Open Water will lead to Remora Pygmea
- Except Tiny Crystalfin (5%) and Pool of Blood (0%)
There are 2 key strategies to win just like in the Bahía del Botín contest:
- Fish where others don't
- Move between schools of fish as quickly as possible
All Northrend schools contain roughly the same number of fish. It is best to start looking for a place where the banks are together so you will spend less time moving and more time fishing.
However, tEveryone will be looking for the same ideal place where the banks are close. These areas will attract more fishermen, there will be more competition for banks and therefore they will run out sooner and people will eventually have to spend more time moving between banks. This means that there is no "ideal place". It all depends on what other fishermen do. Understand your options and be prepared to switch zones if your favorite spot is busy.
Shoals of fish can be found in Northrend in most places where there is water except:
- Dalaran, Icecrown, Hrothgar's Landing, Storm Peaks, Winter's Conquest, Zul'Drak, and Northrend Dungeons
- On the coastal cliffs of Coldarra (in Boreal Tundra) and Sholazar Basin (facing the North Sea) or in the narrow channel in Daggercap bay (south of Valgardeen Howling Fjord
This leaves most of the areas south of Northrend. Good (+) and Bad (-) reasons are specified for fishing in each zone. Of course, it is possible to fish in different areas during the contest but that takes time so it is not recommended.
The probability that the Shark will appear is quite low so, since you are going fishing, you might consider catching fish that you are interested in selling or cooking.
Boreal Tundra
- [+] It is long and it is easy to fly along the coastline. The area southwest of Warsong Hold has many banks.
- [-] Large gaps between groups of benches. The Boreal caravel worth little at auction.
- General: Simple route but long route in search of banks could waste time.
- Banks inside:
- [+] Lake Kum'uya (northeast of Warsong Hold) has a number of banks in a circular lake.
- [-] However, the banks of Mussel scorpion fish It can also appear within the Gammoth and Magmoth caverns or divided into the Flooded Plains. They are time consuming when fishing
- General: The Lake is a very risky area to fish: Initially there may be many banks but after a few minutes, new appearances can be anywhere and it may take time to find new banks in the lake.
Dragon's cementery
- Banks on the coast:
- [-] Large gaps between benches. The coastline is not very long although you can travel directly to neighboring areas.
- General: As in most coastal areas, a lot of time will be spent flying
- Banks inside:
- [+] Indu'le Lake (next to Moa'ki Harbor) has many banks in a small, circular area. The Dragonfin Angelfish it sells well at auction.
- [-] The lake is quickly emptied because there is not enough fishing in the surrounding areas.
- General: Most likely, you are running out of schools of fish which may involve a long flight to an alternative area. These areas will attract fishermen who want to make money while competing.
The Frozen Sea
- [+] The Water next to the Boreal Tundra probably contains the largest grouping of schools of fish in Northrend. One of the few places where you can find 4 or 5 banks without moving.
- [-] The total number of banks is not very large. The area is likely to fill up with fishermen quickly. The closest alternate area (Boreal Tundra Coast) is no big deal.
- General: A good option to start but you have to be prepared to move if there are too many fishermen.
Brown hills
- Banks on the coast:
- [-] Short sections of coastline with few banks.
- General: Avoid the coast of Colinas Pardas
- Banks inside:
- [+] Many banks in the western half of the area with little distance between banks.
- [-] There is a PvP zone in the zone. Hungry bears patrol the best fishing spots. The distance can be great in the eastern part of the zone.
- General: The PvP zone offers the advantage of lakes. That is, many banks close to each other. And with good alternatives if there are no banks (the rivers). Enemy fishermen can be a problem.
Howling Fjord
- Banks on the coast:
- [+] Long coastline with many banks. Fjord is the furthest area from Dalaran so the laziest fishermen will not fish here.
- [-] The distance between the benches varies with some gaps. With the islands, it becomes more difficult to follow the coastline than in other areas.
- General: It is a good option for servers where the fishing contest is very popular and the fishermen are lazy. But you will need some flying time.
- Banks inside:
- [+] One of the areas with the largest number of banks in the interior. Short routes can be established in the northern half. Fjord is the furthest area from Dalaran so the laziest fishermen will not fish here. Chance of completing the achievement This one did not escape.
- [-] Banks are often not as close as in Colinas Pardas or Cuenca de Sholazar.
- General: Probably a "slightly" better option than the Howling Fjord coast.
Sholazar Basin
- Banks inside:
- [+] Large number of banks with relatively little distance between them. Several routes can be established in the area.
- [-] The Sholazar Basin is the most difficult area to go out to find more fish: There are very few shoals north of Boreal Tundra, the only area adjacent to shoals.
- General: The Sholazar Basin offers a good balance between options (number of banks, routes) and speed (time spent flying). But it can quickly get busy!
Advanced strategies
Unlike the Spotted fish (from Stranglethorn Vale Contest), Northrend schools of fish do not reset when the Kalu'ak Fishing Contest begins. This means that anglers can search for groups of schools before starting and start fishing as soon as the contest begins.
Anglers who understand how shoals appear can dedicate themselves to emptying schools of fish in "nuisance" places. Every time a bank empties, the bank that will (eventually) appear can appear anywhere. A small group of Initial Banks will mean that you will catch more fish than other fishermen. You can turn a bad place into a good one.
However, a fisherman can always come to fish in your banks, so this strategy is best accompanied by friends who dedicate themselves to making it difficult for other fishermen to fish (as in Stranglethorn Valley).
If you plan to return to Dalaran without using a Hearthstone (with a Kirin Tor ring for example), put your Hearthstone in a secondary fishing zone of your choosing. If your first pick is very busy, use your stone to save that way. Wizards have a great advantage!
I have not won!
Unlike the Stranglethorn Vega fishing contest, there is no reason to continue fishing after the winner has been announced.
Here are the reasons:
- There are no rare fish to catch
- Even if you fish the full hour, you are not guaranteed to catch the Macuira Shark
- Unless you've already caught the shark (and aren't the first to hand it over), the prize of Better luck next time not worth it compared to the time spent.
The Kalu'ak Fishing Contest will be more difficult to win than Stranglethorn Vega since most contestants will only want the exclusive ring. If your intention is to earn the Azeroth Master Angler achievement (and become Salty) your best chance will be the Booty Bay contest. Although, you can try your luck in both since neither of them is easy to win and luck can help you (or not) to win.
