Cataclysm Beta: (Almost) All About Archeology

bannerArcheology

Archeology is a new secondary profession that arrives with Cataclysm. This means that everyone can learn it regardless of the other professions we have, as with Fishing or First Aid.

This profession is intended as one more method to have fun in the game and the rewards that we obtain with this profession will not affect our performance as players. If you like collecting and the history of World of Warcraft, archeology is undoubtedly your profession.

If you want to delve into the world of history, the discovery of artifacts and even a video that narrates the profession, do not hesitate to continue reading after the jump.

Video summary of Archeology

Before getting into the subject, I recommend that you watch our video on Archeology and then use the article for more information.

Getting started in Archeology

In order to learn Archeology, we will need to speak to one of the faction's Archeology instructors.

  • Harrison-Jones He is the instructor for the Alliance and is located in the Royal Archives of Stormwind Castle.

  • Belloc Sheet He is the Horde trainer and is in the same room as Garrosh Hellscream.

How It Works

Spread around the world there are places of interest to archaeologists. These are excavation locations where players must discover hidden artifacts. As soon as we learn Archeology, when we open the map we will see some Shovels that indicate that there is an excavation site there. By continent there will always be up to 4 active maps. You will always find sites in areas of your level or lower but you can never go to a higher level area because it will not appear. This means that if you are level 25 for example, fragments will not appear in the Plaguelands since it is of a higher level than yours.

In addition, we will gain access to the Archeology journal in which we can see the Races that we have been able to study, the research projects that we have in progress and the Artifacts that we have discovered.

Once we reach an area that has a site (not just any, it has to appear on the map) we will realize that a red sign has appeared that delimits the findings.

When we reach these areas, we will use our new Inspect ability and a Theodolite will appear with a certain color and pointing towards a place.

We must look at the direction in which it is pointing and head towards it. But how much do we move? - Depends on the color of the Theodolite bulb.

The Theodolite can be of 3 colors:

  • RED: You are still far from the place where there are fragments. It is advisable to use a mount.
  • Yellow: You are approaching the place where you will find fragments.
  • Verde: You are very close to the place. A few steps will suffice to fine-tune the position.

When we arrive, a fragment of the zone branch will appear (now we explain that). If we do not know this Branch, it will appear to us now in the Diary and we can begin to know something more about its history. Every time we discover fragments we earn Archeology points. The fragments help us to form the artifacts. We need a certain number of fragments to solve and obtain the artifact.

It is only possible to start a research project for each race and these begin as soon as we discover an artifact of a specific race. When you have the necessary fragments, we click on Fix and we will complete that artifact. In no case will we lose fragments that we have been collecting too much since they will be used for the next project.

Most of the artifacts are common and will tell us some history and an object that we can sell for little money. The price will increase with the value of the artifacts. You can get an idea of this from the number of fragments you need to complete the investigation. Some artifacts are rare. These are blue or purple. Some have no power and are mere toys or pets but others are pieces of armor and armor. These types of objects are linked to the account (although they do not scale with the level).

Tol'vir artifacts are the most powerful and most difficult to find.

In each site we can use to find 3 fragments.

Research branches of Archeology

  • draenei
  • Elf of the night
    • Twilight Grove in Duskwood
  • Dwarf
    • Ironclad Excavation at Loch Modan
  • Fossil
    • Fossil Field of the Festering Scar
  • Nerubian
  • Orco
  • Tol'vir
  • Troll
    • Ruins of Zul'Kunda in North Stranglethorn Vale
  • Vrykul

Each branch has associated deposits. Obviously most of the deposits are missing but we have not discovered them yet.

Archeology Rewards

As we have already discussed, some artifacts are quite valuable. One of our collaborators has been able to get hold of a new pet, the Fossilized Hatchling. Here are a couple of screenshots and a video:

It is one of the most tedious professions that I have done, but the truth is worth it, since for me the game already makes more sense, with all the history that they capture in these fragments.

It is not that difficult, they only collect twice and relogue and so on until they have it full, a tip, collect a maximum of 200 fragments and begin to solve, they will see how archeology goes up in a 2 x 3.
