Patch 4.1: Blizzard talks about the new Valor Points mechanic

banner-patch-4-1

With the arrival of the first content patch for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, the Patch 4.1, a new concept of weekly limit on earning Value Points is introduced. It is an idea that, in my opinion, should have been in Cataclysm since its introduction as it is an improvement from the beginning to the end over the current system.

Lylirra has had a busy few days trying to explain this new system that will be launched with 4.1 and the truth is that it brings quite interesting information. Instead of having a random dungeon that gives us 70 value points a day, now we can get 980 Valor Points from the pull in a single sitting. As I said, it is ideal for those who do not have a lot of time maybe during the week to connect, but have a lot of free time during the weekend, who spend doing dungeons.

The summary of what is entered is as follows:

  • In 4.1 making heroic random dungeons to get valor points is something you can do at your own pace. Would you rather spend all of Saturday hooking up for random? There are no problems!
  • The first seven random Heroic Dungeons of the Zandalari Rising you make during the week will give you 140 value points each. That's twice the value points you receive from the top seven of the first tier of Cataclysm's Heroic Dungeons, considering that these dungeons are a considerable step up in difficulty.
  • You will be able to randomly target the heroics of the Zandalari Rising separately from the first level of cataclysm heroic dungeons.
  • Every week you can win up to 980 valor points making heroic dungeons. If you want to maximize your gain in value points, you can still hit the weekly limit of 1250 by making raid content.

After the jump, you can read the long explanatory messages written by lylira.

Instead of having a daily limit of 70 points of value per day, make a weekly limit of 490 points of value per week of the heroics of 5 players. Would that ruin the game.

Nope. In fact, it is exactly what we are going to do in 4.1. 🙂

Right now you receive 70 Valor Points for the first Cataclysm Random Dungeon you complete each day. In Patch 4.1 you will receive 70 Valor Points for the first 7 Random Dungeons you complete each week. Similarly, you will receive 140 Valor Points for the first seven Heroic Random Dungeons of Rise of the Zandalari (the new Zul'Aman and Zul'gurub dungeons) that you complete in the week as well. Collectively, you can earn up to 980 Valor Points in total exclusively from Heroic Dungeons, which counts towards the weekly limit of 1250 Valor Points.

By transitioning from a random daily dungeon rewards to a weekly format, we will be able to give players more control and flexibility over how they earn their Valor Points. - which is great! - but this also means that we will have to do the math to find out where those points come from. To help with this, we are going to add a "Valor Points Bar" similar to the Experience Points bar at the top of the dungeon finder interface that will record your weekly limit as well as the number of heroics you can still do for get value points during the week.

We are going to write a somewhat long article about the system keeping in mind that it is somewhat complicated, but here is what we can tell right now:

  • In 4.1 making Heroic Random Dungeons for Valor Points is something you can do at your own pace. Would you rather spend all of Saturday hooking up for random? There are no problems!
  • The first seven random Zandalari Rising Heroic dungeons you build during the week will each earn you 140 Valor Points. That's twice the value points you get from the top seven of the first tier of Cataclysm Heroic Dungeons, considering these dungeons are a considerable step up in difficulty.
  • You will be able to randomly target the heroics of the Zandalari Rising separately from the first level of cataclysm heroic dungeons.
  • Each week you can earn up to 980 Valor Points by making Heroic Dungeons. If you want to maximize your gain in value points, you can still hit the weekly limit of 1250 by making raid content.

Not yet in the Public Test Realms available for testing. Although we will let you know when it is and we will continue to offer more information as the development of 4.1 progresses.

Some people don't have time to connect every day, but they have, for example, a lot of time to connect and play on the weekend.

We listen to you, and we agree that asking players to log in every day (or night) just to earn their Value Points is unreasonable and can, at times, cause World of Warcraft to stop feeling like a game and move to become a job. This is why we are making these changes. We want you to enter because you like doing bands, or missions, or - in this case - making dungeons, not because you feel obliged to complete mandatory things every day to maintain viability / competitiveness.

Even just doing the dungeons (both types), you'd hit the cap before the week was out, without setting foot on the raids.

Nah, you wouldn't. You could only earn up to 980 Valor Points per week by doing Heroic dungeons, not 1470 (we are purposely putting a cap on Valor Points for Heroics). If you want to hit the 1250 limit, you will still have to banding.

Again, it's a bit complicated, so let me give you some examples:

Example 1
Player A has a blast with his friends on Friday and does 7 Zandalari Rising heroics, gaining 980 Valor Points (7 x 140 Valor Points). The next day, help a friend with a heroic random dungeon from the first level of Cataclysm - let's say Heroic Deathmines. Because the player has already earned 980 points for heroic random dungeons, they will not receive any value points from the dungeons they made on Saturday.

Example 2
Player B takes out Argaloth, Council of the Wind, and Halfus Partevermis in 25-player mode, gaining 270 Valor Points Tuesday night. For the rest of the week, she makes 3 random first level dungeons gaining 210 Valor Points. Come Saturday, Player B wants to take down a LOT of trolls and decides to repeatedly queue up for a few heroic random hits from the Zandalari Rise. At this point, Player B has 770 points available to collect from heroic dungeons (980 - 210 value points). This implies that you can do 6 of those dungeons - the first 5 will earn you 140 Valor points; by the sixth, you will only get 70 value points.

Example 3
Player C makes a lot of bosses, killing 10 of them with 24 of his friends on Tuesday / Wednesday, earning 900 Valor Points. You can still earn 350 points before reaching the weekly limit. The heroic dungeon value cap of 980 points does not affect you at this point. You can do 5 level 1 heroics - or 3 of the Zandalari Rise, or 2 of the Zandalari Rise + one of the first level - to earn those 350 Valor Points.

All of this is much easier to understand with images (which we'll be sure to include in the blog post) but I hope the above makes sense for now.
