And this week: Captain Placeholder.

Captain Placeholder was a NPC located on the quay of the port of the city of Menethil. His role in the beta version of World of Warcraft was to transport players directly to Auberdine when all the shipping lanes had not yet been implemented. His counterpart on Auberdine was Captain Noteo, who allowed players to be transported to Menethil from Auberdine.

His story captain_placeholder

When the game was released, the shipping lanes were designed and implemented, but a bug in the ship that covered the route from Menethil to Auberdine forced the developers to reposition Captain Placeholder on the Menethil dock until it could be done. remedy the bug. Blizzard fixed the problem by applying a patch in April 2005.

By the time Captain Placeholder was present at the Menethil dock, he became wildly popular with Alliance players, primarily for his ability to instantly transport them to Auberdine without the need to wait for the ship's arrival. When Blizzard removed it from the game, a group of fans of this NPC made a formal request to Blizzard to implement it again, even including a song composed by a player with the nickname of Eledainn, in homage to the possibly the NPC most loved and longed for in World of Warcraft history.

The song

On the stormy shores of Azeroth,
A silhouette did stand.
A brave and stalwart sailor
Who gave a helpin 'hand.
Without fail, on every which,
which we did demand,
He simply smiled and waved his hand,
And sent us' cross the land.

Farewell to thee, Placeholder,
Your ship has sailed to sea.
We'll tip our hats and pray one day
To be as great as thee.
Captain P, you'll never know the emptiness inside
As we sit ashore on Menethil, waitin 'for a ride.

Time did pass, until, one day,
That silhouette did fade.
Where once we found Placeholder
Only scattered winds remained.
The stormy sea went silent
On that dark and dreamy day.
But come along, my friends,
Let's raise a glass up for his name!

Farewell to thee, Placeholder,
Your ship has sailed to sea.
We'll tip our hats and pray one day
To be as great as thee.
Captain P, you'll never know the emptiness inside
As we sit ashore on Menethil, waitin 'for a ride.

So when you find yourself regretting
On that lonely pier,
Watching as the ships come in,
And dryin 'off your tears,
Believe in what he stood for,
And I know that he'll survive.
Inside our hearts dear Placeholder
Will always be alive!

Farewell to thee, Placeholder,
Your ship has sailed to sea.
We'll tip our hats and pray one day
To be as great as thee.
Captain P, you'll never know the emptiness inside
As we sit ashore on Menethil, waitin 'for a ride.

On the stormy shores of Azeroth,
A silhouette loomed.
A brave and handsome sailor
That offered a helping hand.
Without hesitation, at every whim
What we asked of him.
He just smiled and waved his hand
And it sent us to the other side of the world.

Goodbye to you, Placeholder,
Your ship has gone out to sea.
We'll take off our hats and pray for one day
Be as big as you.
Captain P, you will never know the emptiness we have left,
When we sat on the banks of Menethil, awaiting the journey.

Time passed, until one day
That silhouette disappeared.
Where we once found Placeholder,
Only the churning winds remained.
The stormy sea was silent
On that dark and gloomy day.
But come and get closer, friends,
Let's raise a glass in his name!

Goodbye to you, Placeholder,
Your ship has gone out to sea.
We'll take off our hats and pray for one day
Be as big as you.
Captain P, you will never know the emptiness we have left,
When we sat on the banks of Menethil, awaiting the journey.
