Tortos Guide, available in the Abyss of Laziness; in the sun of thunder. Over the millennia, small amounts of mogu flesh-moderating magic seeped into the caverns below the Thunder King's citadel. The dark energies distorted one of the chamber's native dragon turtles and fused it to the surrounding crystalline walls. Known as Tortos, this combination of meat and stone has feasted on the cave's rich mineral deposits and grown to colossal size.
Ions: In addition to the question of why we fight, and the lesson that our true enemy is war, one of the most important themes of Mists of Pandaria has been the slaughter of turtles. This encounter takes that theme to a new extreme and gives players the opportunity to fight a turtle. gigantic and against small turtles, in addition to giving them the ability to kick one of the turtles towards the larger turtle. What more could they ask for?
Fun fact: We originally wanted to create a Fire Turtle boss in the Southeastern section of the Firelands for Patch 4.2, but decided against it. Since then, we have been waiting for the opportunity to fight a turtle.
Tortos is the fourth boss in the Throne of Thunder. It is a very simple match in terms of mechanics, it can present a good challenge.
The fight will require several members of the raid to be able to perform some specific tasks, while the rest will mostly have to avoid falling rocks and perform their competent role.

Summary of the fight
The fight against Tortos is a single phase match during which you must defeat Tortos himself, who remains stationary throughout the fight, as well as two types of adds that he regularly creates.
The main mechanic of the fight is that when one type of adds is low on health, they can be kicked by some member of the raid through an extra action button. Kicking an add to Tortos interrupts his current spellcast, and this is an essential part of the fight, as Tortos regularly casts an ability that does immense damage and must be interrupted. Dps these adds until they can be kicked is a top priority.
Tortos Skills
-
Tortos Call - Tortos lets out a rumbling call, causing several smaller turtles to enter the area and attack players.
-
Whirlwind turtle
-
Spinning shell - The turtle chases players around the room, spinning rapidly and continuously inflicting 195000 to 205000 Physical damage to enemies within 5 yards, knocking them away.
-
Shell lock - The turtle hides in his shell at low health, gaining immunity to all damage. While in this state, the turtle can be kicked across the room by players, applying Shell Concussion to any creatures it hits along the way.
-
Kick shell - This extra action button can be used to kick a defeated Whirl Turtle across the room. Move close to the shell, then aim by positioning it between yourself and your target. Enemies hit by the shell are afflicted by Shell Concussion.
-
Shell concussion - When kicked, the shell spins forward, interrupting enemies it touches and leaving them off-balance, increasing the damage they take from all sources by 25% for 20 sec.
-
-
Raging stone breath - Inflicts 341250 to 358750 Nature damage to all enemies every 0.5 sec for 4 sec. Costs 100 Fury to cast.
-
Growing fury - Tortos becomes angry when no enemies are in melee range, gaining 5 Fury.
-
Rock fall - A lightning-charged stalactite falls from the roof of the cave, inflicting 502125 to 527875 Nature damage to enemies within 5 yards and 72900 to 89100 Nature damage to enemies within 20 yards.
-
Seismic stomp - Tortos performs a massive stomp, stunning all enemies for 1 sec and inflicting Physical damage to each equal to 30% of their maximum health. Quake Stomp also increases the frequency of Rockfalls for 8 sec.
-
Iron bite - Tortos snaps his jaws shut around the target, inflicting 664950 to 699050 Physical damage.
-
Vampiric Cave Bat
-
Drain the weak - Drains health when attacking targets with less than 550000 current health, inflicting 25% of weapon damage as Physical and healing the caster for 10 times the damage dealt.
-
-
Crystal shell - The crystal reacts when struck, encasing the attacker in a shell that absorbs incoming damage and healing. Initially the shell can absorb up to 15% of max health in damage, but healing absorbed by the shell is added to this total, up to a cap of 75% of max health. The shell breaks when it cannot absorb any more damage.
Skills
Tortos
Before we list the skills of Tortos, we want to remind you that Tortos is stationary. If no one is in its melee range, then it will cast
Growing fury, which basically reduces the time to cast your next damaging spell. Therefore, the tank must be careful not to abandon its melee range.
Apart from this, Tortos has other abilities.
-
Raging stone breath It is an ability that Tortos casts every 45s, which does massive damage to the entire raid. This ability has a cast time and must be interrupted by kicking a Whirlwind Turtle to the boss (something we explain in detail down). The time until he casts the next Furious Stone Breath is indicated by Tortos's fury bar, which increases as time passes. When Tortos reaches 100 Fury, he casts this ability. As a reminder, if there is no one within melee range, he will gain 10 Fury (presumably per second), causing his next Furious Stone Breath to be cast sooner.
-
Rock fall It is an ability that Tortos uses regularly during the fight. is an ability that Tortos uses regularly throughout the fight. It knocks stalactites off the ceiling of the cave, dealing high damage to anyone within 5 yards of impact, and minor damage to anyone within 20 yards. The impact is clearly marked several seconds before with blue circles.
-
Seismic stompTortos stomps powerfully, stunning all enemies for 1 second, dealing physical damage equal to 65% of their maximum health and increasing the frequency of Rock fall for 8 seconds.
-
Iron biteTortos clenches his jaws around the target, dealing 525000 Physical damage.
Whirlwind Turtles
Every 60 seconds, Tortos will summon 3 adds called Whirlwind Turtles. These adds cannot be tanked, and at the same time they move around the room randomly. They constantly deal damage to players within 5 yards of them through a spell called
Spinning shell, it also repels them. This is not a big problem, as they can be attacked by melees from farther than 5 yards due to their large punch box.
When a Whirlwind Turtle is about to die, it will cast
Shell lock. becomes immune to all damage and stops moving. In this state it will stop launching
Spinning shell, then it becomes harmless.
Very important, when a turtle is in the Shell Lock state, it can be kicked. All members will have an extra action button during this fight, called
Kick shell. This ability is only available when players are near a Shell Lock turtle. Using the extra action button, kick the turtle in the direction the player is pointing. So, for example, for the player to kick the turtle to direction X, they must face location X, with the turtle in front of them.
Using Kick Shell makes the turtle fly through the air. When it hits an enemy, the tortoise interrupts its spellcasting and gives it a debuff called
Shell concussion for 20 seconds, causing them to take 25% increased damage.
Kicking turtles is essential to disrupt the
Raging stone breath of Tortos.
Vampire Cave Bats
A group of Vampire Cave Bats they enter the room every 30 seconds. These bats have normal aggro, and their only ability other than dealing melee damage to the tank is
Drain the weak. Drains health when attacking targets with less than 350000 health remaining. Deals 25% weapon damage as Physical damage and heals the caster for an amount equal to 50 times the damage dealt
Tortos Strategy
The strategy to defeat Tortos is not complicated. We will summarize it first, before going into further details.
- Always have a tank with Tortos. They must make sure they have enough health to survive the spell.
Iron bite, using CDs and help from the healers. Always have the other tank ready to catch the Vampire Cave Bats as soon as they enter the room.
- Your DPS should always kill any Whirlwind Turtles, then clean the room of the Vampire Cave Bats, and only when there are no more adds do DPS to Tortos.
- Be sure to interrupt all
Raging stone breath Tortos with a player kicking the Whirlwind Turtles at the boss.
- Make sure everyone avoids falling stalactites caused by
- Prepared to heal the vast amount of damage done by
Tanking concerns
The tank with Tortos must always be within melee range of the boss. Keep in mind that the boss is stationary, so if you stray out of his melee range, he will melee the next highest threat at his fingertips. If no one is in his melee range, he will cast
Raging stone breath sooner, which is detrimental.
The tank with Tortos must be prepared for the
Iron bites. There is no release time for these, but with their predictable behavior, boss addons should alert you to these. Tanks should try to time their active mitigation in such a way that they always have something active for each Iron Bite. Failing that, they should at least be at maximum health, as Iron Bite will generally do about 60% of the tank's health in a single hit.
The tank with the Vampire Cave Bats they must be positioned somewhere in the center of the room (this is where they come out), and they must be prepared to pick them up and tank them. They don't particularly hurt, but it's important that this tank makes sure it never drops below 350k health, otherwise it will allow the bats to heal with
Kicking Turtles and Interrupting Tortos
Since the 3 Whirlwind Turtles appear every minute, and a
Raging stone breath is cast every 45 seconds, you should never run out of Turtles to interrupt these spells.
A player must always be assigned to interrupt Raging Stone Breath. This player should ideally be a Ranged or Healer, and they should move into position within seconds before Furious Stone Breath is about to be cast. When we say to his position, we mean that he must put the Whirlwind Turtle (whichever is with
Shell lock, that is, not the one that is active) between your character and the boss. Then, while pointing your character at the boss, they must use the extra action button
Kick shell when the boss begins to release the Raging Stone Breath. We also advise selecting a backup one for this task, who should go to a different turtle and be prepared to kick it just in case - This might be necessary if an active Torbelline Turtle moves to the interrupting assigned player and knocks them down.
DPS priority
As mentioned above, the priority is to "kill" the Whirlwind Turtles (technically, leave them with low health until they are immune). This is because you have to make sure that there are turtles that can be kicked by each Raging Stone Breath. Additionally, DPS the Whirlwind Turtles as soon as they appear also reducing the amount of time they deal damage and knocking down raid members.
The second priority is to kill the Vampire Cave Bats. Although they don't do much, if your tank has to handle more than one wave at a time, these will probably lower your health to less than 350k, then you have to avoid this. If the Melees end up wasting a lot of time running after the Whirlwind Turtles (and being knocked over by them), they can in return DPS the Vampire Cave Bats right away.
Finally, DPS Tortos. Remember that for 20 seconds after a turtle is kicked, Tortos will receive 25% more damage due to the debuff
Shell concussion. So, you will want to play your offending CDs during this time. We are not sure whether or not it is possible to keep kicking Whirlwind Turtles to Tortos to keep the increased damage longer, or if it is possible to stack this effect. If this strategy is possible, we will update the guide accordingly.
When to use Heroism / Bloodlust / Time Warp
we recommend using
Temporal Distortion when Tortos is under the influence of
Shell concussion, since the damage will be increased.
Learning the Fight
The first thing all raid members must learn is the priority of the DPS. Once this is mastered, the adds must be kept under control, which will make the fight significantly easier to handle.
Second, but also very important, one or more players will have to learn to kick the turtles at Tortos to interrupt
Finally, everyone should get used to stepping away from the circles that indicate where the stalactites will fall, as their damage is high and failing to dodge them will undoubtedly cause deaths.
