Auction house update

In order to resolve some issues related to the auction house, we are reconsidering how we calculate deposits (the refundable amount you pay to register your auctions). This amount is based on the seller's price for the item, and for profession materials in particular, it is usually too low to keep the cost of warehousing low. Deposits are important on items like gems, rare gear that binds when equipped, and such, but not on craft ability materials (items such as cloth, ore, leather, etc.).

One particularly troublesome thing we've observed is that a very substantial portion of the craft faculties materials are auctioned off by units. With some add-ons, it's a breeze to run auctions as small as these, resulting in dozens or even hundreds of auction pages for a single item. After thinking about how to change this behavior to improve the overall auction house experience, we concluded that we prefer to avoid inflexible situations such as limiting the number of item ads a player can place, or increasing the minimum number of units. from auctions, because this could interfere with the gaming experience for many players.

We plan to increase the cost of depositing some profession materials based on the quantity being auctioned, which should motivate players to register larger group auctions.

    For example:

    • Let's say there is a player who wants to sell 200 units of tidespray linen for 10 gold each. Currently, the normal deposit cost for each item is 1 copper, with a minimum deposit of 1 silver, so an auction of 200 linen requires a deposit of 1 silver, and 200 auctions of 1 linen they add up to a total deposit of 2 gold.
    • Now imagine that 20% is added to the auction registration deposit. With a sale price of 10 gold each, the deposit goes up to 2 gold per auction. In the case of 1 group of 200 linen, the total purchase cost is 2000 gold, and the new deposit is 2 gold and 1 silver. In the case of selling those 200 flax individually, the new deposit, which adds 2 gold per group, translates into a total deposit of 402 gold.

In either case, the deposit is returned to the seller if the object is sold. So this change does not affect successful auctions.

Our intention is to notify you about this change and that you send us your opinions. We are compiling a list of the items that would be affected, which will likely be only high-quality items. Additionally, we will release the change to the PTR first, so that plugin creators can work on the change while we thoroughly test it.

This change will most likely remain a mere temporary measure as we are working on improving the default auction house going forward. Plugins are clearly used by many players because they find the default auction house interface inadequate. Changing the amount of deposits temporarily will help in the short term, but we will continue to work on global improvements, which will be applied to the auction house in a future patch.
