Blizzard Responds to Community on Nostalrius - Blues

blizzard responds to the community about nostalrius

For a few weeks now and as a result of the closure of the private Nostalrius server, it has been a hot topic both in the forums and on social networks, where players have been expressing their opinions on whether or not Blizzard should enable Vanilla servers. Two days ago and with the help of J. Allen Brack, Blizzard responds to the community about Nostalrius.

J. Allen Brack speaks as a representative of the company, he comments that although the issue of classic servers has taken on special relevance in recent weeks due to the closure of Nostalrius, it is something they have been dealing with for years.

Explain the closure of Nostalrius, they simply must protect intellectual property rights, otherwise they would harm Blizzard, he explains.

They convey something important to us, they have been attentive to all the comments that have been made by the players, and that is appreciated, sometimes only if we are listened to and we know that the issue is on the table we feel better. That does not mean that tomorrow they will open a Vanilla server, on the contrary, in principle their answer is negative. In his words "all the options we have explored are too difficult to implement"

However, they are exploring another possibility, "pristine servers." At the moment it will be necessary to wait as is logical since in case something is done about it now is not the time, that is clear. On the other hand, mention that Blizzard is in talks with the creators of Nostalrius, who knows, maybe they will reach an agreement in the future 🙂

We want to let you know that we are following the Nostalrius discussion closely and that we appreciate your constructive comments and suggestions:

Our silence is not due to neglect on our part, nor does it reflect the level of commitment we feel towards the subject under discussion. Many of Blizzard employees, including members of the development team, have been hardened gamers of the franchise since classic WoW. In fact, I started working at Blizzard precisely because I'm in love with classic WoW.

The theme of classic WoW servers is one that has been in the running for years (and is a must-see at every BlizzCon), and has come back to the fore in recent weeks. It has passed through everyone's lips and has appeared both in internal team meetings and in talks with project leaders. We want to share some ideas with you:

Why not leave Nostalrius as it was? Plain and simple, if we fail to protect intellectual property rights, we would harm Blizzard's rights. And this infringement of intellectual property includes any medium that uses the WoW brand, such as unofficial servers. We've looked at it, but there is no legal way to protect Blizzard's intellectual property and license pirate servers at the same time.

We have explored other options for developing classic servers, but all of them are too difficult to execute: the risks in ensuring interoperability of classic servers, not to mention the extensive maintenance that multiple live versions of WoW would require, are simply too many. I wish there was a magic button that we could press to solve everything; but there isn't.

So what can we do to capture the essence and feel of when WoW was first released? One idea has taken shape over the years: "pristine servers." In them, any acceleration of the leveling process would disappear: immediate level increases, transfer of characters, relics, the bonus of the Recruit a friend program, WoW tokens, and access to the areas between kingdoms (or connected kingdoms) as well as the group finder. We don't know if this is what our community would like to have, so we continue to debate the issue.

One more thing. We have contacted the people who run Nostalrius. They obviously care about the game, and this is important to us as well, so we look forward to maintaining this contact and continuing to discuss ideas for the next few weeks.

You, our Blizzard community, are the most dedicated and dedicated gamers out there. We appreciate all your suggestions and constructive comments. And know that we are always listening to you.

J. Allen Brack
