The sky grows darker and darker over Azeroth ...

The Legion expansion pre-patch is coming soon and we wanted to give you a preview of what to expect and when to expect it.
This update will introduce a wide variety of features and content that lay the foundation for the expansion, including system changes, quality of life improvements, and major in-game events. Some of these features will be available immediately, while some of the content will be unlocked in the weeks leading up to the expansion's launch. Read on for more details.

The inaugural discharge

When the pre-expansion patch is released, players will have immediate access to many of the key system-related features. Some of these important updates include:

Transmogrification updates

The new transmogrification collection system will make it easier to collect, store, and review the materials you want to use for transmogrification without having to take up space in inventory, in the bank, or in the void vault. As you collect items that can be used in this system, you can search for them (and also sort them according to class or slot) in the "Appearances" tab in your "Collections" interface.

Class updates

We're making some major changes to the classes and their specs for Legion with the idea of reinforcing their identities. Major changes to spells, talents, and more will take effect as soon as the pre-expansion patch is released. For more information on what's new for each class and specializations, check out our previous post on Class Advancement.
We're also making it easy to switch between specializations for different content. Players will be able to queue for dungeons, raids, battlegrounds, or arenas in any role available to their class, while they can continue to play another role while they wait. When they enter the content they have queued for, they will automatically switch to the appropriate role (at no cost) and then automatically switch back when they leave the room.

The path to Legion

In the weeks following the pre-expansion patch, we will be unlocking even more content leading up to the launch of Legion on August 30. We have yet to determine the exact date for those events, but players who purchase Legion in advance will be able to play as a Demon Hunter around the second or third week of August (no later than August 17 worldwide). We will share more information in the coming weeks, but here you can take a look at what we have in store for you:

Invasions of the Burning Legion

Before hellfire rages across the Broken Shore, the Burning Legion will begin their attack on Azeroth, turning known territories into demon-ridden battlefields. Everything will depend on the heroes of the Alliance and the Horde facing this violent attack.

Early Access to Demon Hunter

In the weeks leading up to launch, those who have pre-purchased Legion will gain early access to the new class: The Demon Hunter. Players will start at level 98 and find themselves in the fel-ravaged expanse of Mardum, where they will play the initial Demon Hunter experience before joining their allies in the fight against the Legion.

The battle begins on the Broken Shore

As the situation grows more desperate, the heroes of Azeroth will begin their first foray into the Broken Shore, the epicenter of the demonic invasion.
All features and content mentioned above (except Demon Hunter Early Access) will be available to all World of Warcraft players, regardless of whether or not they have pre-purchased Legion.
