Interview with Tom Chilton

En Gamona have done an interesting interview with one of the main designers of World of Warcraft. Tom "Kalgan" Chilton has answered questions about the future expansion, talks about Patch 3.2 and future 3.3 with Arthas content.

En wow raid They have made a translation from German to English of the most interesting part of the interview and we will leave it to you in Spanish.

Honestly enough details are given and there is much talk about what we will see in the future and Blizzard's intentions when it comes to directing players in the dungeons. We will see at Blizzcon what they teach us.

gamona: Tom, with the next patch you are going to change the dungeon system again. Instead of versions for 10 people and 25 people there will be a heroic version for both types. Why this change?

Tom chilton: There are many reasons. The first thing is that the dungeon system will be more transparent for the player. We think that hard modes, like the ones in Ulduar, are too complicated. There is not a button everywhere like in Mimiron that says "Press me to activate hard mode". It is difficult for us to design the encounter because we want to prevent the player from inadvertently activating the hard mode. This new system should make it clearer for players. The main reason is that we can adjust the encounters more precisely. Right now, the different modes depend on each one and therefore it is difficult for us to change the hard mode without changing the normal mode.

gamona: So, won't there be more hard modes?

Tom chilton: Not in the classical sense, as in Ulduar. Ulduar is basically a huge hard mode dungeon where you activate only individual bosses. In the future you will activate all bosses when you start the heroic version for 10 or 25 people.

gamona: You are also changing the emblem system. With Patch 3.2 all Emblems of Heroism and Valor will be replaced by Emblems of Conquest. Doesn't it scare you that players who are currently fighting in Ulduar feel betrayed that everyone can buy the "big" items?

Tom chilton: No. It's like with expansions, when they are released, the items that you have fought hard for lose their value. To compensate for this there are new Emblems with which more advanced guilds will be placed ahead of normal guilds.

gamona: You spoke of the Emblems of Triumph. You have commented that how players obtain emblems will depend on their play style. What did you mean by this?

Tom chilton: Refers to the amount of Emblems you can earn. Of course, you will earn an Emblem of Triumph with each boss you have defeated as usual. But if you don't die during combat, you will earn additional Emblems. Moral: When you die less, you earn more Emblems!

gamona: The achievement system has become very popular, everyone tries to achieve them. Will players be able to spend their points to buy items or pets?

Tom chilton: I don't think it's a good idea to spend them because then they would be lost. We want it to be an Indiador so that players can compare themselves to each other. Players may be able to unlock special upgrades if they hit a specific number but the reward would be purely cosmetic, no change to the game.

gamona: In Patch 3.2, there will be new challenges for more experienced groups with the Argent Tournament. How would you rate the difficulty compared to Naxxramas and Ulduar?

Tom chilton: Our original philosophy is that normal modes shouldn't be much more difficult than Naxxramas. Difficult modes however will be very difficult, like Ulduar. The first bosses however, should not be very difficult but later they will be more complicated. Guilds that have been successful in Ulduar shouldn't have major problems in normal mode but in Heroic you should have experience with Algalon and Yogg-Saron. We can't please everyone, even with 4 levels of difficulty because the abilities of each guild varies a lot.

gamona: Many players have complained about the difficulty of Naxxramas, Malygos and Sartharion. How are the complaints with Ulduar?

Tom chilton: It's pretty funny. There are huge differences between what players say and what we see in our internal stats. We have a lot of information sent to us by more advanced guilds who have complained about how easy Naxxramas was. With Ulduar it seems that we have gone too far. We have seen in our stats a drop in the number of players participating in raids since Naxxramas. Most of the players are in Malygos or Kel'Thuzad. It is possible that we have adjusted the content too much making it more difficult and therefore we will remain firm to our principles so that the normal mode should be accessible.

gamona: The plan was to remove the Icecrown Citadel and Arthas in Patch 3.3. Do we continue with the plan?

Tom chilton: Yes it is. We have worked in the citadel for a few months. We have started on Arthas, the final match and then we have returned to the entrance. We wanted to make sure the combat was as epic and good as possible.

gamona: In the Chamber of Aspects, there is only Sartharion, will we see more dragons in the future?

Tom chilton: You will fight against Sindragosa, Queen of the Frostwyrms in Icecrown Citadel. In the Chamber of Aspects, there will be additional dragons but I can't tell you if this will happen in Parhe 3.3. I can assure you that it will not be in Patch 3.2.

gamona: We will assume that you will announce a new expansion at Blizzcon. Rumors speak of Gilneas and / or Maelstrom. We know that you will not give us concrete answers so we are going to go another way: What would you like the most for a next expansion?

Tom chilton: (laughs) Hypothetically speaking, I would predict, that there would be some good new content, that our players have liked in the past. A new expansion should have the "three-thirds" goal. One third is that everything must be new, another third is to carry old elements and the last would be existing content in a new point of view.

gamona: Lots of players like to play old content like Molten Core or Ahn'Qiraj. Do you want to make old content more attractive, with epic chains for example?

Tom chilton: We definitely want to bring back some old dungeons in heroic versions like we have done with Naxxramas in the current expansion. We don't want to rework everything at once because it's fun to go back to a higher level to defeat old bosses that scared us not long ago. But we will relaunch old dungeons over time.
