Sartharion: The Onyx Guardian

The Obsidian Sanctum is an encounter with a single boss (sartharion, the Onyx Guardian) that comes with 3 optional mini bosses. Each battle is unique as the group can choose Sartharion's difficulty based on how many mini-bosses they kill before the encounter (each out of the 3 dragon that we leave alive will assist Sartharion with a new ability).

The band will obtain an additional epic for each dragon that is alive and if it is able to kill it with the 3 living dragons it will obtain a flying mount.

The entrance to the dungeon is under the Dragon's Rest Temple, where there is a portal for each of the Aspects of the dragon's flight. No key is needed to enter this dungeon.

There are 2 types of groups scattered around this small room.

Onyx Dragonants come in groups of 4 and always include a Onyx Lineage General accompanied by 1-2 Captain of the Onyx Flight and 1-2 Onyx Fire Mistress.

El Onyx Lineage General he must die last since when he dies he breaks all the crowd control that we have made over the other three dragonkin and prevents us from being able to control them again during the rest of the battle.

All the Onyx Fire Mistress must be our main target as they use their spell Create Orb of Flame that as you can imagine creates an orb of flames that inflicts periodic fire damage to whoever is nearby. If the group of 4 appears with 2 teachers, it will be necessary to control one with a trap or something similar.

The Captain of the Onyx Flight They do a lot of damage but they don't have any special abilities to mention, don't forget to kill them before the General. The Onyx Tabernacle Guardians come in groups of 2, they are piñata monsters that, although they hit hard, do not have complications. Occasionally they will throw a member of the group the Curse of Relief which will heal the Guardian each time the player attacks him so be sure to quickly remove the curse or keep the player out of battle while he is cursed.

The 3 dragons

The 3 dragons share strategy and skills since they are practically the same. The combat against each one consists of 2 phases.

La Phase It will consist of tanking the dragon and hitting it (piñata mode on) and you just have to avoid Shadow Fissures that will appear on the ground. Every X seconds the dragon will open a portal and go to another dimension. All the raid, except for the main tank and its healers must cross the portal and do the task of each boss that I will explain now:  

vesperon - When the portal appears, Vesperon will cause Shadow damage to anyone who attacks it, in addition there will be a dragonkin behind the portal that will have to be killed, once it is finished with it the shadow damage will disappear.

 

tenebron - When the portal appears, Tenebron will summon a pile of eggs behind the portal and begin to hatch them. The raid must kill as many eggs as possible because when you finish summoning the eggs will hatch and dragons will appear that will help Tenebron. In case there are eggs left, the dragons will have to be killed immediately.

 

shadron - When the portal appears, Shadron will invoke a shield which will avoid all the damage, also behind the portal there will be a dragonborn that will have to be killed, once it is finished with it, the shield will disappear. You have to repeat the 2 phases alternately until the dragon has died.

Dragons don't throw any epics, just a Emblem of Heroism.

Skills

Dragon normals

Breath of flames: Deals 8750 to 11250 damage. Fire damage to enemies in a cone in front of the thrower.

Tail lash: A tail sweep hits all enemies behind the caster, dealing 3063 to 3937 points. damage and stuns them for 2 seconds.

Crack: Deals 35% weapon damage to an enemy and their closest allies. Affects up to 10 targets.

Sartharion Specials

Summon Fire Elemental: Sartharion can summon Fire Elementals to attack the raid. They don't hit very hard at first, but if you don't kill them quickly they will enrage and do a lot of damage to the band.

Lava flares: Sartharion can summon columns of lava to the east or west of the room. The east flare will move west and the west flare will move east.

Strategy

 

Position 1

When the fire elementals appear, everyone must focus on killing them before they rage. With lava flares, special care must be taken. If the flare comes from the east, the band should not move:

However, in case the lava starts in the west, the main tank must move north and the rest of the band must move south to avoid flares.

Position 3

The waves are quite big and move slowly. No DPS or healer should be within reach of Sartharion's tail or forehead thus preventing everyone except the main tank from avoiding all the general abilities he has as a dragon.

Also, the waves make the elementals grow, so a secondary tank should put the elementals in the holes.

Each dragon we leave alive will include a new battle fun:

  • tenebron: Will constantly summon dragons into battle.
  • vesperon: Will add a debuff to the raid that increases Shadow damage taken by 100%.
  • shadron: Will give Sartharion a shield that will reduce all damage taken.

At 10% of Sartharion's health, the dragon will summon 5-10 fire elementals instead of the 1-4 it previously summoned. In case you plan to leave a living dragon (or all 3) you have to take into account some aspects:

  • We must clean the entire instance (except the drakes that we want to live) since if not all of them will start combat with us and we will cause a wipe.
  • The drakes come down from time to time to make their portal so it is advisable to kill the drakes first if possible.
  • To leave any of the Drakes alive, everyone should bring at least 2-3 pieces from Tier 7 and the rest epic (from heroic or loot from naxxramas).
