Changes to player and creature nameplates in Patch 3.3

Patch 3.3 will introduce a change to how Nameplates are displayed for both creatures and players. I think they are good changes and that they will make things more real.

Zarhym, in the American forums, tells us about them:

We've made some changes to the way creature and player nameplates are displayed in-game and we want to receive Feedback from you in the Public Test Realms.
There are 3 significant changes that you should notice:

  • The range to which you can see name plates is now much longer.
  • Now you will not be able to see the name plates through objects that block the line of sight.
  • Instead of trying to get the nameplates to order themselves, they now mount on top of each other. We think this makes it more useful for large groups (ex: Onyxia Hatchlings)

Please tell us how these changes affect your gaming experience in either PvE or PvP.

We are going to clarify some points based on the Feedback and complaints that we have seen in this thread.

  • As soon as you can look through a room door, you will see the name plates of the players or creatures in this room.
  • Similar to the first point, the Pillars and Bridges in the Sands will not hide the name plates of friends or enemies.
  • The nameplates for the Totems can be activated / deactivated in the "Production" setting in the Interface Options in the Trial Realms. We will add this functionality for pets as well.
  • The way the nameplates are arranged when large groups of creatures and players are grouped together is not fully functional and we will continue to maintain the way they are arranged and displayed during the testing process. You can choose to deactivate this feature to its original function also in the "Production" section
