Patch 4.0.1: Glyph Changes

With the entry of Patch 4.01, the Glyph System that we currently know undergoes a drastic change. We will see what the registrants think of these changes ...

In the upcoming patch 4.0.1, we will introduce the redesign of the current glyph system. This update brings several changes, including the addition of a new glyph tier, the transition of glyphs from consumable items to permanent spells, and an improved user interface.

After the jump the changes in more detail.

In the primordial

The glyphs will now be separated into three different tiers: Primordial, Sublime, and Minor.

primordial - Primordial glyphs will generally provide direct increases to damage or healing. Examples of primordial glyphs include Glyph of Howling Blast. Which causes the Death Knight's Howling Blast ability to infect targets with Frost Fever, and Glyph of Insect Swarm, increasing the damage of the Druid's ability, Insect Swarm, by 2%.

Gorgeous - Major Glyphs will generally boost spells and abilities to offer additional utility. Some examples of Major Glyphs include Glyph of Silencing Shot, which will cause the hunter to automatically gain 1 point. focus when they successfully silence an enemy spell cast, and glyph of ice block, which will reset the cooldown of frost nova each time the mage uses ice block.

Minor - Minor glyphs generally provide players with additional conveniences or cosmetic changes. Examples of minor glyphs include Glyph of Righteousness which will reduce the mana cost of the Seal of Righteousness for paladins by 1%, and Glyph of Levitate, which will remove the component requirement for the priest's levitate spell.

In total, there will be nine glyph slots: three primordial, three sublime, three minor. As players level up, they will be able to progressively unlock "groups" of these slots three at a time (a minor slot, a sublime slot, and a prime slot). The first set of glyph slots at level 25, the second at level 50, and the end at level 75.

Teach a person to put glyphs ...

In addition to the tier changes for the glyphs, they will also go from being single-use items to permanent spells that the player can learn. Although the item the glyph is learned from will be consumed upon use, once learned, the player will always have access. This functionality will be very similar to the current mechanic that allows players to learn certain recipes and item patterns.

Despite these changes, activating a glyph will work more or less as it does now. To activate a glyph, players only need to select the desired glyph from their list of known glyphs and click on the appropriate slot in the tier.

Dust to dust

With the transition from single-use items to permanent spells, the process for changing activated glyphs has been slightly modified. Similar to activating a learned glyph, players will need to select the new glyph from their list of known glyphs and then place it on top of the old glyph. While this process will not destroy the Ancient Glyph as it does now, it will require a new component, Vanishing Powder, which can be purchased from Inscription Vendors or crafted by Scribes.

As a precaution, the following dialog will appear before a glyph is changed:

Are you sure you want to inscribe this glyph? The existing glyph will be lost.

    Cost: 1 Vanishing Powder

Players will have the opportunity to confirm the trade or cancel it. Please note that the ancient glyph will not be permanently lost; it will only be deactivated.

You have to catch them all

To complement each of these changes, the Glyph UI window has been completely redesigned. All the glyphs will be organized in the glyph panel according to their tier (minor, sublime or primordial) and, similar to how spells and abilities are displayed in the trainer window, they will be sorted by the "Already known" categories. "Not available", and "All glyphs". Players will also be able to search for glyphs using keywords and the results will appear below each corresponding tier.

To access the new glyph UI, players will need to open the talent panel (default: N) and then click on the "Glyphs" tab.

I'm sure glyphs will play a bigger role in all encounters. What is your opinion?
