Beginner's guide to creating a custom interface

Having a suitable interface can help us many times to see those small details of combat that escape our vision, either due to lack of space or lack of information.

It is important to be clear about what we want from our interface before designing it. In this guide we will start with the basic addons necessary to modify the basic interface a bit and we will develop a simple interface on the fly.

Before starting you should know that the addons named here must be extracted in the ¨Addons¨ folder that is inside the ¨Interface¨ folder which in turn is inside the ¨World of Warcraft¨ folder. You can see This Video if you don't know how to install them. The addons, you can download them from curse.com.

The parts that make up the game's serial interface are:

  1. Action bars
  2. Group, band and player.
  3. Mini map
  4. Buffs

We will start building our interface in parts and the first thing we will have to touch; As in my way of seeing the essential in an interface, they are the ¨ Action bars ¨

Action Bars

The addons that I recommend using to modify our action bars are the following:

In this case I will choose the Dominos as it is the one in which I have the most experience. Once we are clear about the addon that we will use, we will make a small forecast of the bars that we will need:

  • Bar 1 : Attacks that make up my rotation (they are the most important and must always be visible)
  • Bar 2: Attacks or spells that do not make up our rotation but must be present in some encounters (see sorcerer's stone, light well, summoning wardrobe, buffos etc)
  • Bar 3: Food, jars, mounts, poisons etc
  • Bar 4: Paladin Auras or Druid Forms, Demonology Warlock Auras etc.
  • Bar 5: Vehicle bar
  • Bar 6: Pet bar.

Once we are clear about the order of the bars, our preferences when placing them comes the time to fiddle with the Dominos to change the configuration (size, position, spaces) of each bar. We only have to click on the bar that we want to modify with the right mouse button, as well as to hide a bar that we do not want to be visible, we click on it with the central mouse button; from there… it's all to your liking!

[notice] If we want to add some design to our bars we can download the Button Facade that allows us to change the shape of our buttons, the shading, the border and the design. I currently use the Button Facade: Renaitre[/ notice]

Player, band and group

The recommended addons to change the settings of the drive frames are the following:

*both vuhdo and grid are for display of the raid.

Once we have installed the addon we want (in this case I will install the X-perl) we proceed to move the unit frames so that it is more comfortable for us to play. There are several recommendations depending on the role you perform in the game, for example:

  • Frames for DPS: The frames of the dps do not necessarily have to be very visible, it is only necessary that you see your spells applied to the boss / enemy.
  • Frames for TANK: In the tank, the opposite happens to us because we must have the player / boss frames well visible so that we will not have to look away to see how we are living.
  • Frames for HEALER: We can dispense with the group frame as Vuhdo or Grid allows us to see the group as well as cure it at the same time. The frame of your character, more target, more focus should be visible, although your job is to heal you are interested in seeing your mana bar.

Once it is clear what addon we want and how we want our unit frames, we proceed to change the size of the frames, the color, etc. In summary, we configure the unit frames to our liking.

Mini map

The addon that I recommend to change the design, size or position of our minimap is the following:

There are more addons that perform this function but due to its ease of configuration I opted for the sexymap since this guide is dedicated to beginners in this UI's

The map is a very useful element when it comes to tracking, farming, etc., the game is not bad but since we have got down to work to develop our custom interface this is just one more thing to change.

It is easy to install the addon go to interface / addons / sexymap and choose the theme that you like the most and voila!

Buffs/Debuffs

The recommended addons to modify the size, shape, and position of our benefits / detriments are the following:

  • Satrina Buff Frame: To open the options in the game put / sbf and you can access the configuration.
  • Elkano's Buffbar: It is a bit different from what we are used to since it allows us to see the buffs in the form of a list of bars.

In my opinion, and as advice, although both addons are good, I recommend the first one because of the ease or little modification it generates in our interface.

Well, we have changed the basic interface of the game as our objective, now we will have to add that extra information that we should have in our interface and that the basic interface of the game did not allow us to have.

Details

We will start with those details that, although they are not essential in the basic interface, make the game much more comfortable for us.

  • Cat : Chatter, Prat, WIM. The latter is only for the whisper system that opens a new window for each whisper, type instant messaging)
  • Casting bars: Although the Dominos already integrates a casting bar, it is hardly modifiable if you want it to be something more personal, you can download the Quartz.
  • Damage / Heal Gauges: Recount, Skada; I personally use the Skada, the design I like more besides that it takes up less memory.
  • Agro meters: omen 3
  • Dots/Hots: To see the cd of our spells, the procs of the beads etc I recommend the Forte Xorcist that in combination with the OmniCC they do a very good job.
  • Toltip: Many people will wonder what the toltip are, let's see the toltip are those descriptions that appear on the screen when we hover the mouse over a character or an NPC, they are quite annoying the bigger they are. With the following addon you can modify the size and position of these TipTac descriptions; you can open its configuration by typing / tip.
  • Name plates: Nameplates are the ones we see by pressing the "V" in the game and the default ones are pretty boring; if you want a little more joy and information in your bars you can download the TidyPlates
  • Combat text: So many green and yellow numbers on the screen are quite annoying, you can use the MikScrollingBattleText to order the damage and healing that goes in or out.

Adding the details we end our simple interface changing only some points of it to make it more comfortable; it is obvious that when we pilot a little more on the subject we will be able to obtain great works of art.

I hope that this guide has been able to help beginners in this custom interface, I hope I can explain in more detail the configuration of many addons mentioned here.

It is important to remember one thing:

¨It is the interface that has to be molded to you, not you to it¨
